Souvenirs for Piano Quintet

Composed for this project, the four movements of this composition each derive their inspiration from a different musical source. Each draws upon the vocabulary of a specific time in history and embodies something about that time. They are truly souvenirs. Each movement is like a discovered object with a story that precedes its finding. Each is a riddle in it’s way…when, or whom, does each evoke?

Listen for how each instrument finds its own unique path through the discussion. Like a rich dialogue each interlocutor shapes and is shaped by the ideas and expressions of the others. Sometime echoing, sometimes adapting, sometimes refuting the utterances of the conversationalists the lines weave and mix and bring each souvenir to life.

Sonatina

A single movement piece for piano, this started as a simple piece with a quirky character. The opening bouncy music was intended to by technically straightforward but somehow it didn’t stay in its place. The composition features an ever-widening set of techniques as musical material switches places between the two hands. The jaunty opening becomes more elaborate and is joined by layers of other music creating a self-contained soliloquy among multiple personalities

Tears

A deeply personal composition that I composed in 2010 upon hearing news of my father’s imminent passing from cancer, this piece joins the sounds of the string quartet to the dark mourning of the clarinet. The addition of a flute gives this piece many sonic colors as it turns from quite sorrow, to warm reminiscence, stoic fortitude, brief sobs, and quiet resignation

Ballade

This piece is a duet between a clarinet and piano. The rolling accompaniment of the piano moves from foreground to background while the clarinet searches and longs through a lyrical tale. The tale is abstract but full of adventures that feature the full timbral range of the clarinet from its dark-hued lowest register (chalumeau) through its clear middle voice (clarion) and up into its penetrating upper range (altissimo). This piece require careful coordination between both players to keep it aligned

Wedding Prayer

Truly a conversation in original conception, this is a string quartet arrangement of a a capella work for four voices that I composed for my wedding ceremony. In that original, each voice: soprano, alto, tenor, bass, was tasked to create instrument-like flowing lines on the vowel ‘oooh’ while one or two of the voices sing the text over that accompaniment. It is a very demanding vocal work as you will be able to imagine from hearing the strings in this quartet recording as they weave the lines of this prayer together.

Souvenirs for Piano Quintet

Octave Records Studios

This special collaboration started with an email exchange with producer Jessica Carson. In our exchange she indicated that Octave Records was interested in expanding its recorded offerings to feature more classical music options for their discerning clientele. Octave is the production arm of PS Audio, a celebrated maker of hi-fidelity speakers and audio equipment.

Recording fidelity and quality is a critical part of helping PS Audio customers to have the best possible listening experience with their hardware. When I met the founder of PS Audio, Paul McGowan, I immediately recognized that this was an opportunity for me to create recordings for a special community of people for whom active listening was a way of life. I set to work on writing new music for this project that would reward these attentive listeners with music that would weave the independent lines of the instruments in way subtle and overt. The resulting hour of recorded material will draw you into the very room where we recorded (pictured at right). I had the pleasure of again working with my collaborator Benjamin Harding, as well as creating a new work for clarinetist Kwami Barnett.

This recording will give you the closest experience to a live performance that recordings can ever provide. I hope you enjoy it!
